In a club statement, Barcelona said tests confirmed the ligament tear and that De Jong would continue receiving treatment while his recovery is monitored.
Although the club has not provided a timeline for his return, MCL injuries can sideline players for several weeks or months, meaning De Jong is expected to miss the opening stages of the new La Liga campaign.
De Jong enjoyed another solid season for Barcelona in 2025/26, making 25 league appearances, scoring one goal and providing five assists. Widely regarded as one of Europe's top midfielders, he remains a key figure for both Barcelona and the Netherlands national team.
The injury is another setback in De Jong's career after several fitness problems in recent seasons. Barcelona will now be forced to adjust their midfield plans as they prepare for the new campaign without one of their most influential players.
