The Spanish champions announced the injury following medical examinations, revealing that the Dutch international will undergo treatment and remain under close medical supervision as he begins his rehabilitation. 
In a club statement, Barcelona said tests confirmed the ligament tear and that De Jong would continue receiving treatment while his recovery is monitored.

The 29-year-old reportedly played through the injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in every match for the Netherlands despite wearing heavy strapping on his knee. Barcelona have opted for a conservative rehabilitation plan, with surgery not currently planned.
Although the club has not provided a timeline for his return, MCL injuries can sideline players for several weeks or months, meaning De Jong is expected to miss the opening stages of the new La Liga campaign.
De Jong enjoyed another solid season for Barcelona in 2025/26, making 25 league appearances, scoring one goal and providing five assists. Widely regarded as one of Europe's top midfielders, he remains a key figure for both Barcelona and the Netherlands national team.
