According to her family, Moraa first complained of back pain and general unwellness. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with pneumonia and a lack of blood (anaemia). The condition later progressed to kidney failure. Despite receiving treatment, her health continued to deteriorate. Friends who later spoke publicly about her illness said she had developed a swollen stomach in the period leading up to her death.
The family of Mathew Ocharo has launched an appeal for public support to help settle the hospital bill, which they said has surpassed KSh 1.2 million because of the prolonged intensive care. Mathew Ocharo, a chorister at SDA Church Betterliving Getembe, has been at the centre of an outpouring of sympathy from the online community that followed the couple’s content. Ocharo is also survived by a son.
In one of her final TikTok posts, Ocharo’s asked her followers for prayers. In the caption she wrote in Kiswahili: “Niponye niwe huru” (Heal me to be free) and requested that someone share a Bible verse. The video has taken on added poignancy for her followers after news of her death circulated widely.
Judys return from abroad had been expected to mark a hopeful new chapter as the couple prepared for marriage. Instead, relatives are now focused on funeral arrangements and clearing the outstanding medical costs incurred during her three-week stay in intensive care. Relatives said they had managed to raise some funds but remained far short of the total amount needed.
Hospital bills of this magnitude are a recurring challenge for many Kenyan families, particularly when prolonged ICU treatment and complications such as kidney failure are involved. The family said well-wishers and members of the public had begun responding to the appeal. Details of contribution channels were being shared through the couple’s social media platforms and community networks in Kisii.
Judy’s death has drawn tributes highlighting both her online presence and the abrupt end to the couple’s wedding plans just three months before the scheduled ceremony. Funeral arrangements were still being finalised by the family at the time of reporting.
The case underscores the personal tragedy of a young woman who returned home with hopes of marriage, only to succumb to a rapidly progressing illness, as well as the heavy financial pressures that serious medical emergencies continue to place on ordinary Kenyan households.
