KISII UNIVERSITY WELCOMES 9,300 FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS IN GRAND MATRICULATION CEREMONY

The event, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi, drew thousands of new students and their guardians. Prof. Ogechi formally admitted the large cohort and delivered a keynote address that combined warm welcome with firm guidance on academic success and personal responsibility.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chancellor described Kisii University as one of the best institutions in Kenya and internationally. He urged the new students to work hard, remain focused on their academic goals and fully embrace the opportunities available to them.

Prof. Ogechi cautioned the freshmen against engaging in activities that could negatively affect their studies or future prospects. He specifically raised concern over the rising number of students joining the university while still under the age of 18. He advised these younger learners to exercise caution, make responsible decisions and seek guidance whenever necessary as they navigate university life.

The Vice Chancellor further encouraged all first-year students to uphold discipline, resist negative peer pressure and make the most of their time at the institution. He emphasised that success would depend on consistent effort, good choices and active engagement with the academic and support systems provided by the university.

The ceremony formed the climax of the orientation programme that began earlier in the week. Admissions had progressed smoothly, with university staff, Scouts and St John Ambulance volunteers assisting in processing thousands of students. Official figures indicated the total first-year intake exceeded 9,300, encompassing both government-sponsored placements and self-sponsored learners.

University officials highlighted the institution’s commitment to inclusivity and ensuring no student is left behind. Orientation sessions covered academic expectations, campus facilities, student conduct, mental health support, career services and the rules outlined in the student handbook.

Parents and guardians who accompanied the new students expressed appreciation for the organised reception and the clear messages delivered by the university leadership. Many noted the significance of the formal matriculation as a milestone that officially integrates their children into the higher education community.

Kisii University continues to expand its capacity and programmes across multiple schools, including Business, Health Sciences, Agriculture, Information Science, Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Pure Sciences and Law.
