KRG THE DON JOINS SONKO’S NEDP, SETS SIGHTS ON NAIROBI SENATE

Musician and businessman William Karuga Kimani, popularly known as KRG The Don, has formally joined former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s National Economic Development Party (NEDP) as he pursues a bid for the Nairobi County Senate seat in the 2027 General Election. 

KRG announced his move on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter in his political journey.
“New beginnings… New journey. Let’s walk together to transform our city for better,” KRG said in a social media post. 

He also described NEDP as a party of the people and highlighted Sonko's influence in Nairobi as part of his decision to join the outfit.

Sonko subsequently confirmed KRG's political ambitions, saying the musician would seek the Nairobi Senate seat on the NEDP platform. The announcement followed a meeting between the two in Nairobi. 

KRG has previously said that, if elected, his priorities would include service delivery and oversight of the Nairobi County Government.
He has also spoken about the need for elected leaders to demonstrate how their offices benefit residents, particularly through effective representation and oversight.

His entry into the race places him in the emerging field of politicians and aspirants positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
KRG had previously expressed his intention to challenge incumbent Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying political offices ultimately depend on voters' decisions. 

KRG's move comes as NEDP, led by Sonko, continues to attract aspirants ahead of the 2027 General Election. The party received its certificate of full registration from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in December 2025.

The party has also seen other Nairobi aspirants declare their intentions. Sonko's daughter Saumu Mbuvi, for instance, recently announced her bid for the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat on the NEDP ticket. 

For KRG, the move marks a transition from entertainment into electoral politics, with the musician now seeking a formal role in Nairobi's political leadership.

Importantly, joining NEDP and announcing an intention to contest the seat does not by itself amount to final electoral nomination. The eventual candidate will be subject to the party's nomination process and the applicable electoral requirements.
