KAREN NYAMU REAFFIRMS SUPPORT FOR RUTO AFTER ‘WANTAM’ CHANTS AT KICC

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has reaffirmed her support for President William Ruto after sections of the crowd heckled her with “Wantam” chants at a KICC event.
Nyamu faced a hostile reception on Sunday, September 27, 2026, when she took the stage at content creator Natalie Githinji’s Endometriosis Warriors awareness event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
Sections of the crowd repeatedly chanted “Wantam” as Nyamu addressed attendees, interrupting her remarks on endometriosis advocacy and her work in Parliament. Reports said the chants eventually drowned out parts of her speech.
Speaking after the incident, Nyamu said she had anticipated some heckling because comedian and activist Eric Omondi, who has been critical of the government, was associated with the event. She said the reaction would not deter her from continuing with her work on endometriosis.
On Monday, September 28, Nyamu made her political position clearer in a Facebook post, saying the reception at KICC would not make her abandon her support for President Ruto.
She said she would not join the “Wantam” movement simply to gain public approval and reiterated that she stood behind Ruto.
Nyamu also expressed disappointment that the controversy had overshadowed the event’s main focus, endometriosis awareness. She said she wished more attention had been given to Githinji, the women living with endometriosis and the artists and other personalities who attended the event.
Nyamu has also alleged that Eric Omondi and the event’s master of ceremonies were involved in organising the chants. However, she did not provide independent evidence to support the allegation, and reports said Omondi had not publicly responded to the claim by Monday.
The incident has since generated significant discussion online, placing Nyamu’s political stance and the “Wantam” chants at the centre of attention following an event that was primarily organised to raise awareness about endometriosis.
