The regional success marks a significant redemption for Cardinal Otunga. Just weeks earlier, the side had suffered a heavy 26–0 defeat to Butula Boys in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) national final. In Morogoro, they reversed that result by beating the same opponents 17–14 during the pool stages.

Cardinal Otunga had qualified for the FEASSSA tournament as Nyanza Region champions and KSSSA national runners-up. Their strong showing in Tanzania underlined their rapid rise in secondary schools rugby sevens.

The tournament was staged at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro. Cardinal Otunga’s consistent defence and clinical finishing allowed them to dominate both Kenyan and regional rivals from Uganda and Tanzania.

Coach Edwin Metobo had earlier expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness after the national championships. The team’s ability to bounce back from the KSSSA final loss and maintain an unbeaten record highlighted their resilience and preparation.

The victory adds to Kenya’s strong tradition in East African schools rugby competitions. Cardinal Otunga’s players and coaching staff celebrated the achievement as a landmark moment for the school and for Nyanza Region rugby.

Officials and supporters have congratulated the team on their dominant display. The win is expected to boost the profile of rugby at Cardinal Otunga and inspire younger players in the region.

Further details on final standings for second and third place were still being confirmed as other Kenyan sides completed their remaining fixtures. Cardinal Otunga, however, had already sealed the championship with their perfect record and superior points difference.
